MC export to XDCAM EX

MC export to XDCAM EX

Dear Avid Technology, PLEASE add output to XDCAM EX in MC!

If you have to playout your sequence now and you have only Sony PMW-EX1/EX3, Here is my MC to XDCAM EX export work around, that saves me in Lybia last time…

1. Google for Empty XDCAM folder, or get it (Thanks to Bob from Avid-L2) here: http://www.filefactory.com/file/b4f86f7/n/Empty_XDCAM_Folder.zip

2. Unpack Empty XDCAM Folder.zip

3. In Media Composer [File]->[Link to AMA Volume] point to unzipped XDCAM folder, press OK on MC message “No Clips found at…”

4. Export your sequence not more than 4 audio tracks, it could be Long GOP, or linked from AMA – no need to mixdown. That’s greate! [Output]->[Export to Device]->[XDCAM] choose XDCAM HD 35Mbps (it will output 1440×1080 for some reason, but it works fine), or XDCAM HD 50Mbps (it will be 1920×1080) BTW why MC does that?

5. Open ~\XDCAM\Clip and rename C0001.mxf if you need to export another one

6. Insert SxS card into Express slot, or connect camera/card reader by USB

7. To write back to XDCAM SxS  on Windows7 I used EDIUS 6 (I guess 30 days trial version should do the job), and Final Cut on OSX.

8. In EDIUS create 1920×1080 25fps upper field… project

9. Create new sequence, add exported MXF to the bin – Add File (Ctrl+O), navigate to ~\XDCAM\Clip\C0001.mxf

10. Drag C0001.mxf to the Timeline and press F11

11. In “Print to File” find XDCAM on the left window choose XDCAM EX HQ 35Mbps

12. XDCAM EX Exporter should recognize SxS card automatically, without SxS just choose any directory. If you are in a hurry, you can choose High Speed in Quality/Speed, but don’t unplug your laptop from the mains – it may throttle down CPU and increase encoding time!

13. EDIUS will create proper file structure on SxS card, and place encoded file into \BPAV\CLPR\EDIU0001_01

14. Insert card into camera, new clip should appear in the browser

15. Don’t forget to switch camera player to SD mode if you are feeding in SD

16. On MacBook Pro (it lacks Express card slot! why do they called “pro”?) Final Cut Pro7 can import MXF and export XDCAM EX mp4, then import with Clip Browser to the card.

Regards,

Alex
